Road to the Black Hills

After leaving the North Platte Valley, we went north towards the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Along the way, we passed a local landmark.

We also stopped at Fort Robinson, in north-west Nebraska.

This fort was active from 1874 to 1948. It protected the routes that sent supplies and prospectors to the black hills during the gold rush, and was a major fort used to "contain" the Indian population and protect the Red Cloud Indian Agency. The famous cheif Crazy Horse - of Little Bighorn fame (where he led one of the two groups that defeated Custer), surrendered at fort Robinson, and was later killed while trying to escape.

This timeline hits some of the highlights of the fort's history. Between 1876 and 1878 was very interesting to me. Also interesting were 1897 and 1943.

We had a chance to ride in a stagecoach.
